Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics (FCDI)
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Areas of Expertise: Fire Protection, HVAC, Plumbing
Hooper’s Mechanical Division—Plumbing, HVAC, and Fire Protection—completed a transformative project for Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics (FDCI), a leader in cancer cell research and treatment development. The project combined and expanded two existing office buildings into a single state-of-the-art laboratory complex featuring certified GMP labs, collaborative spaces, and a new warehouse.
Hooper’s Plumbing team designed and installed a custom waste neutralization and bio-kill system capable of processing materials across a pH range of 1–12. They also installed a Triplex dual knockout pot vacuum skid powered by three 25HP motors and one of the Midwest’s largest vacuum-jacketed liquid nitrogen distribution systems that spans 2,000 feet and serves seven cryogenic rooms. This innovative system safely captures and displaces nitrogen gas, saving the owner a seven-figure cost.
The HVAC team installed custom air handling units with APEX energy recovery piping to reduce heating and cooling loads. GMP spaces featured HEPA filtration and tightly coordinated multi-layer ductwork designed through BIM modeling to ensure precise spacing and structural balance.
Fire Protection installed a new fire pump, 11 wet pipe systems, two preaction systems, and a clean agent system across three interconnected buildings, each requiring different upgrades.
Through innovation and collaboration, Hooper delivered safe, efficient systems that empower FDCI’s researchers to accelerate breakthroughs in cancer treatment.
