High Point Transmission Line
Location: Colorado
Areas of Expertise: Transmission
Hooper’s Electric Power Division continues to partner with Xcel Energy on multiple projects in Colorado. Our Overhead Line team recently completed work on one such project, the High Point Transmission Line in the city of Aurora. Hooper’s role in the project featured installation of the new steel structures and nearly 4 miles of double circuit 230kV transmission line.
Hooper crews constructed 29 double circuit monopole structures on concrete foundations. Each structure stands between 90 and 140 feet above ground and weighs an average of 60,000 pounds, with spans of approximately 1,100 feet between structures.
Hooper crews successfully overcame several challenges during the project. For example, in the initial planning phase, our team prepared to use a helicopter to help move wire over the E-470 tollway. Unfortunately, due to the jobsite’s close proximity to the Denver International Airport, federal airspace regulations limited flying near the airport. As a solution to this, Hooper crews used alternative aerial equipment with guard structures and netting to position the wire into place.
Another challenge of the project included working limited nighttime hours to pull the transmission lines over the busy tollway. Special thanks to our crew members for adjusting their normal work schedule to meet the needs of our client.
The project adds network capacity to accommodate new commercial and industrial development in the area.
